We need to realize the old saying of "kids will be kids" is making us ignorant to the severity of bullying, especially in its new forms.  As teachers, you see kids for a majority of their day. You need to be able to recognize the signs and know how to respond to bullying.

How to Notice one of your Students is being Cyber Bullied:  (8)

  • The student has a noticeable change in mood or behavior for an extended amount of time.

  • The student withdraws from social situations.

  • Hear multiple rumors about the student​.

  • Notice the student is constantly checking social media or text messages, and then becomes upset.

  • Notice a decline in homework or grades.

How to Help a Student who is Already a Victim of Cyber Bullying:  (8)

 

  • Respond immediatly.

  • Show compassion towards the student.

  • Inform the student's parents and other teachers of the bullying.

  • Notify the police if a serious threat is made.

  • Watch the student for signs of retaliation.

How to Prevent Cyber Bullying in your Classroom and School:  (8)

 

  • Have constant adult monitoring in all areas of the school (e.g. cafeteria, computer lab, school bus).

  • Create a climate of acceptance.

  • Implement anti-bullying programs.

  • Have students and parents sign anti-bullying pledges.

  • Support students who are witnesses of bullying.

  • Get support from parents saying they will monitor their child's online activity at home.

  • Talk to students about bullying and how it can be harmful.
