We need to realize the old saying of "kids will be kids" is making us ignorant to the severity of bullying, especially in its new forms. To help protect children from becoming bullies or victims, parents must know the signs and what actions they can take to help.

  • Child unexpectedly stops using the computer.  (7)

  • Becomes nervous or upset when receiving an instant message or text message.  (7)

  • Consistently skips or complains about going to school.  (9)

  • Becomes emotional after using the computer or receiving a text message.  (7)

  • Withdraws themself from social situations.  (9)

How to Notice the Signs that your Child is being Cyber Bullied:

  • Quickly switches or minimizes screens when you walk in.  (7)

  • Overreacts when not allowed to use the computer.  (8)

  • Refuses to talk about their internet activity.  (8)

  • Has multiple social media accounts, including ones that are fake identities.  (7)

How to Help your Child not be a Victim of Cyber Bullying:

  • Teach them not to talk to strangers on the internet.  (6)

  • Teach them not to post or send photos of themselves that are embarrassing, even if it is someone they trust.

  • Teach them if it is digital or on the internet it is always accessible.  (7)

  • Teach them not to place themselves in dangerous situations (e.g. drinking too much at parties, meeting with strangers      from the internet, etc.).  (9)

  • Monitor your child's online activities.  (5)

How to Help your Child if they already are a Victim of Cyber Bullying:

  • Offer them emotional support.  (7)

  • Tell your child not to open or respond to any messages from their bullies.  (6)

  • Save the messages from the bullies, they may be needed to take action.  (6)

  • Contact the school to inform them of the situation.  (6)

  • If your child is threatened with physical harm contact the police.  (6)

How to Prevent your Child from Becoming a Cyber Bully:

  • Teach you child how bullying can harm others.  (5)

  • Teach them there can be serious consequences.  (8)

  • Monitor your child's online activities.  (5)

  • Teach your child to respect others no matter how different they are.  (8)
